Bristol has long been a centre for exciting and underground new music, producing such luminaries as Portishead and Roni Size and his Reprazent crew. These days, the basslines rumbling through the city are even deeper, as Bristol is increasingly becoming a hotbed for a new wave of innovative dubstep and grime producers.
Heading up this movement is Subloaded – Bristol’s answer to FWD/DMZ. On Friday 7th August the Subloaded gang are heading to the capital for a night to show us Londoners how it’s done. We Fear Silence will be leaving their usual home of The Arches and heading to Corsica Studios for this party, as the underground, intimate vibe of Corsica is perfect for the Subloaded sound.
The crew is headed up by Pinch, whose determination to push dubstep forward has cemented his position as one of the most creative producers within the genre. He’ll be joined by fellow West country innovators Appleblim, Peverelist and Headhunter.
To make the night that extra bit special, we have a We Fear Silence exclusive, as Bristol boys Joker & Gemmy & Guido will be playing 2 Hours Back 2 Back, their first EVER set together representing the Purple Wow Sound – a new collaboration between the three producers. The sound they are creating marks a new direction for dubstep and grime – rather than entering the race for the baddest bassline, they are creating tracks with an old school garage feel to them and an emphasis on melody and vocal, such as Guido’s ‘Beautiful Complication’ or Joker’s ‘Psychedelic Runway’ and more recently ‘Digidesign’ on Hyperdub. Croydon may have given birth to the genre, but Bristol is helping it to grow up very nicely indeed.
In room 2, the legendary Gilles Peterson will be playing one of his eclectic 4 hour sets taking in everything from Brazilian baille-funk to Japanese electro. At his last set for We Fear Silence, he showcased a harder more late night sound than you usually hear on his radio show or at his more laid back gigs, so come with your ears open as you’ll never quite know what to expect…
